Isobutylene

Formula: C4H8

CAS No: 115-11-7

Isobutylene (C4H8) is a highly reactive, colorless gas used as a chemical building block in the production of fuel additives, polymers, and specialty chemicals. Its versatility and reactivity make it valuable across automotive, industrial, and consumer product markets.

Applications include:

  • Alkylation with butane to produce isooctane, a high-octane gasoline component.

  • Dimerization to diisobutylene (DIB), followed by hydrogenation to produce isooctane fuel additives.

  • Polymerization to polyisobutylene (PIB) and butyl rubber for automotive tires, lubricants, adhesives, sealants, and coatings.

  • Production of methacrolein for specialty chemical synthesis.

  • Manufacture of antioxidants, fragrances, and odorants for natural gas.

EFC Gases & Advanced Materials supplies isobutylene with commercial grade purity, backed by the accuracy and precision of our analytical techniques.
