Boron Trifluoride

Formula: BF3

CAS No: 7637-07-02

Boron Trifluoride (BF3) is a colorless, toxic, and corrosive gas with a pungent odor. It is a strong Lewis acid, making it an important catalyst and reagent in a wide range of industrial processes. In the presence of moisture, BF3 forms hydrofluoric acid, which can corrode certain metals, so careful selection of equipment materials is essential.

Applications include:

  • Catalyst and reagent in organic synthesis for alkylation, polymerization, esterification, and isomerization reactions in chemical and pharmaceutical production.

  • P-type dopant gas in ion implantation for integrated circuit manufacturing, introducing boron atoms into epitaxially grown silicon layers to adjust electrical properties.

  • Radiation detection in neutron detectors, ionization chambers, and atmospheric radiation monitoring.

  • Fumigation agent in certain pest control applications.

  • Protection of molten magnesium and its alloys from oxidation during melting and casting.

  • Precursor for BF3 complexes used as catalysts in polymer and resin manufacturing.

Material compatibility:
Equipment used to handle BF3 is typically constructed from stainless steel, Monel®, or Hastelloy®. In the presence of moisture, BF3 forms hydrofluoric acid, which can corrode carbon steel and stainless steel. It also reacts with polyamides.

EFC Gases & Advanced Materials supplies high-purity boron trifluoride tailored to the demanding needs of semiconductor, electronics, and specialty chemical applications. Our production, analytical capabilities, and secure logistics ensure consistent quality and reliable supply from production to point-of-use.
